Eddie Mugavero: music

IN THE KITCHEN

(Written by Eddie Mugavero & David Spear-recorded by David Spear and the Darts)
David and I had an interesting way of cowriting. He'd suggest a title, I go write the words and melody and bring them back for his approval..He usually didn't change a thing, but I recall rewriting this one about 20 times. The debate got so heated once, that he held my little doggie Paul in his hand and threatened to throw him across the street if I didn't rewrite a lyric. Of course, David would never do that, as he is one of the kindest souls I've ever known..but at the time, I certainly figured a rewrite was worth my lil doggie's safety!! lol. David contributed the amazing bridge in this song.. he always challenged me to get 'out there' and be truthful. Melding our individual truths was what we eventually got good at. Whatever it takes I guess. Famed DJ Cousin Bruce Morrow can be heard during the intro dedicating this to our Moms and Dads. Mama B is Dave's mom, Nick is both our Dad's name, and Mary, my step-mom. We simply called him and asked him to do this. Very cool. Anyone over 35 from NY or NJ will recognize that voice immediately. This was also produced by Rob Galbraith. (PS, thanks for the Beatle boots, David..they don't have nearly as much "sole" as you..) And RIP Dave's mom and dad..I know how much you miss them. So do they.
IN THE KITCHEN

IN THE KITCHEN DADDY FLICKS HIS CAMEL
MAMA MIXES TANG AND HANGS THE CARD I MADE HER
ON THE PINK REFRIGERATOR
IN THE KITCHEN LESLIE GETS A TONI
TALKIN’ ON THE PHONE BOUT ONE OF HER ROMANCES
SHE THINKS SHE’S CONNIE FRANCIS
WE HAD WARS AND TRUCE AND COUSIN BRUCIE
COLD MORNINGS HUDDLED ROUND THE OVEN
WE WERE NEVER SHORT OF LOVE…

IN THE KITCHEN THE FORMICA WAS GREEN
THE LINOLEUM CLEAN ENOUGH TO EAT RIGHT OFF IT
TIL MY BEATLE BOOTS WOULD SCUFF IT
IN THE KITCHEN MOM WOULD FEED THE WHOLE BLOCK
COOKING ROUND THE CLOCK DAY AND NIGHT THAT’S WHERE WE'D FIND HER..SAYING..”SON, THIS AINT NO DINER!”
I HAD NESTLES GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES
AS I DREAMED THROUGH CHIFFON OUT AT THE STARS
I NURSED MY FIRST BROKEN HEART
IN THE KITCHEN

THE KITCHEN WAS OUR LIVING ROOM THEN BANG-ZOOM TO THE MOON
WE ALL GREW UP TOO SOON….

IN THE KITCHEN THE JUNK DRAWER’S EMPTY
THE COUNTERS ARE RED..THE LINOLEUM IS GONE NOW
THE MICROWAVE IS ON NOW
IN THE KITCHEN MAMA STILL BAKES BUT GIVES MOST OF IT AWAY
AND KEEPS SOME IN THE FREEZER
FOR WHEN DAVID COMES AND SEES HER
AND ON THAT NEW GE HANGS A CARD FROM ME
I JUST SENT MOM THIS MOTHER’S DAY
OH SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
DADDY STILL SMOKES MOM STILL COMPLAINS
SOMETIMES I WISH I STAYED IN THE KITCHEN
